Badges. They're among the most prevalent emblems of modern life, a recurring motif we've all had to deal with, whatever our background or profession. Many of us use them at school or work -- not just for identification, but very often for access to places where they won't let in just anyone. They imbue some of us with the authority to control the lives of others, at least to an extent. Some we wave at sensors so our silicon guardians will know to raise the bar to let us into a parking garage. A few we wear like medals, to boast of some honor; and sometimes, individuals are forced to wear them to make others aware of a sin, real or perceived.
